Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
