The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
