"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: The sender also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are not alone. A host of celebrated fans have openly coveted the honor.

It's clear something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the best groups, they're a close trio. Their visuals often depict them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure joy you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to form a group."

"And thus anyone are welcome to be the fourth member of Haim."

Historic Milestone

The group have called into a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the honor resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The themes track departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Style

That developed confidence required a different sonic direction – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal tales.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their number one focus.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
